Throughout history, witches, pagans, and nature-revering peoples have celebrated this turning point of the Wheel of the Year. The Equinox marks the second harvest: a time of gratitude for abundance, reflection on balance, and preparation for the darker half of the year.

In ancient times, people honored the sun’s equal dance with night, recognizing the power of balance before the days tipped toward shadow. For witches, this is a sacred moment to give thanks to the Earth, to honor what has come to fruition, and to release what must be left behind.

The ancient Greeks, too, held deep myth and ritual around this season. The Equinox was tied to the start of the story of Persephone, daughter of Demeter, who descended into the underworld to be with Hades during the winter months. Her departure marked the waning of warmth and light, as Demeter’s grief brought the land into decline. This myth was central to the Eleusinian Mysteries, powerful initiation rites celebrating death, rebirth, and the eternal cycle of life. The gods Demeter and Persephone embodied both the abundance of harvest and the inevitability of descent into darkness—echoing the eternal truth of the Equinox itself: balance and transformation.
