Lachrymatory are unique vessels said to be used to hold the tears of those who are in mourning. They were first recorded in ancient Greece and Rome and then popularised in the early Victorian period as a part of the funeral rites. The lacrymatory, lachrymatory, or lacrimarium, where small bottles are made of glass or terracotta, they became part of the funeral ceremonies to hold the memories, sadness and pain trapped within tears to then be layed alongside the body granted rest to the soul. It was said that the more tears that were contained within the vessels the higher esteem you where held in life said to those who morn you and there for it would act as payment towards a better after life and judgement. Within the Victorian period, there are accounts of these bottles being used within Séances to connect with the spirits of those you have mourned after.

This stunning antique glass Lachrymatory is from the Victorian period, with its ornate original gold gilding and glass craftsmanship it's breathtaking. In superb condition for its age, however, missing its original stoper. However, corks can be used as a replacement.
